Helping the Hobby Grow       Hobby News Editorial
Is our hobby dying? I hear someone moaning about this every now and then. I have heard it in different settings too. Everywhere from within the industry to the international communities that the internet has made possible. If you stop and think about it, the doom sayers are right in some ways. The hobby is changing. Locally and nationally. This is just like lots of other things in the world. In other ways, however, that thinking couldn't be more wrong. That is particularly true for the Front Range.
Our area is blessed with many active model clubs and supportive shops. In any month this year, there is at least one hobby event besides club meetings. The clubs are producing and supporting events that celebrate the hobby. The shops support the hobby community beyond merchandising by offering activities for enthusiasts and the public and supporting the efforts of the clubs. Several shops host club meetings. These events will help the clubs and the shops by inviting new people to join us in our favorite activity.
But all this won't mean anything if there aren't people to support it. Most impressive was the turn out for Hobby Town's National Model Contest held at the CSprings store March 29. (It'd be nice to hear about what happened elsewhere in the area!!!) That showed that there is lots of interest. Much more than anyone involved with or attending the show expected. Well done, Colo Springs! This kind of support needs to happen for all the events. That goes from everything from club meetings to contests.
If the hobby is to grow and continue this momentum, there has to be support. Build a model. Join a club. Attend a show. BE A VOLUNTEER!!! Hep with registration. Help judge. Share what is happening in your area with the rest of the region. Write it up and send it in to your club's newsletter of the Front Range HObby News. Let's get things really hopping!!!

Modeler of the Year Goes Public
    March 15 CSprgs.
As decided by the club earlier this year, Centennial IPMS took the bold step of bringing their Modeler of the Year Contest out of their meetings and into the public eye. The members enjoy the freindly in-club competition and wanted to share it public. Compleat Games and Hobbies hosted the first event in Centennial's 2003 series.
The contest was accompanied by demos of model building by Centenial members. There was also a Diplay Only option for members to make their work available to the public. Besides all the officers, members Jim Mesco and Steve Lieuvane built models for the duration of the show. Ty and Carrie Hare of Compleat Games also sponsored a People's Choice Award. THe winner was determined by popular vote of the non-members persons attending the show.
The Modeler of the Year Contest is freindly competition between participating members. The winner is the member who earned the most points by competing in the quarterly contest. There are three contests per year. Points are earned for building a model that places in a category. Categories include Aircraft, Armor, Figures, SciFi, Automotive and Ships. Splits or new categories are created as needed by the number and variety of entries. The secret of winning is to place in as many categories per contest as possible. That requires building kits of many different subjects quickly. Sounds like fun!
This extract from the IPMS Centennial Newsletter written by Secretary Ken Meyer: "Here are the results of the March Quarterly Contest. The category winners are as follows. Junior - Ty Schmauser’s F-4 Phantom; Diorama - Jim Mesco’s Polish A/T Gun; Figures - Tom Grossman’s “Bandit”; Autos- Peg Mesco’s Taurus #5 took 1st, and her Austin 2 received 2nd; Aircraft - Steve Luevane’s MC 202, 1st place, and Bob Shoop’s Avia S-199 took 2nd; Armor - Bill Schmauser’s Albion /17Pdr. took 1st, Kevin Degenkolbe’s Walker Bulldog took 2nd, and Bill Schmauser’s SDKFZ 138 received 3rd. There was also a people’s choice category at this contest, and Bill Schmauser’s Albion/17 Pdr. Gun was the chosen one.
For the time being, these contests will be for Centennial members only. The public is invited to come to the events, see the models, learn about the club and cast their vote for the People's Choice Award sponsored by the shop. The next Quarterly Contest will be held in June at Hobby Town Citadel Crossing in Colorado Springs. There will be demos and display at this one, too. Come celbrate the hobby.
Look for big things from Centennial this year, particularly at the website. Member CQ Anderson was taking pictures of members build up for the club's webstite. Now that's service!

National Model Contest at CS HTown South
    CSprgs March 29
Hobby Town South was the CSprings site for the Hobby Town National Model Contest. Like other Hobby Town stores across the country, the CSprings staff set up the tables and opened their doors to the local enthusiasts. The tables filled quickly with a great variety of entries. Many of the CSprings contest regulars showed up to enter their finest or chat with the rest of the fans.
In total there were 92 models submitted by 37 modelers!! Entries included cars, aircraft from several eras, some great U-Boats, figures and a house! That was larger than anyone was expecting. HTown staffers Gil Silva, Kevin Deagenkolbe and Russ Mueller rolled with the surprising and welcome punch and ran a great show. Right on schedule, they closd the exibit for judging. Right on schedule, they opened it back up after the awards were placed on the table with the kits.
Best Junior went to a Gundam Mech built by Anime and Figure Enthusiast Group member Brice Blum. Best aircraft was a Me 109 by Decker Zimmerman. Best Paint went to a Stegosaurus by mark Krabbenhoft. Best Figure went to Mark as well for the prototype of his exclusive release Grendel. Best armor was a Firefly by Centennial IPMS member Bill Schmauser.Taking Best of Show was a stunning bulldozer also by Bill.
Given the success of this contest, show chairperson Gil Silva is considering a second event in October. Let's all help with the right decision here and tell Gil that it's a great idea and offer your support.
The contest is sponsored by Hobby Town USA and took place at participating stores all around the country on the same day. The Best of Show winner advances to the National Competition held later this year. Photographs of these models are sent in for this contest.

Check out the pictures! If anyone got car photos, please send them in. I'd like to post them.
It's hard to imagine that this was the only Hobby Town along the Front Range that participated. Let's hear from the others!!

Thanks to Gil, Kevin and Russ for their work at the show. Thanks to HT CSprgs owners Todd Noble and Joe Muise for supporting the effort. Congratulations Hobby Town CSprings and Contest participants!

Lucky Neko Closes
    After four years,
Lucky Neko Anime and Hobbies closed their doors for the last time on March 22. Co-owners Penny Province and Glen Norris added a bit of delightful flavor to the hobby mix in Colorado Springs. Glen is an accomplished military and anime figure modeler and marker artist. Penny enjoyed figures and gaming pieces. Their work was often on display in the store's case. Their varied interests made the inventory appealing to a variety of modeler tastes.
The shop was a nice addition to the Springs hobby scene. Besides the variety of models and supplies on the shelves, the store also offered its back room for modeling events. Twice monthly, the Anime and Figure Enthusiast Group met there. The shop also hosted a mecha contest and airbrrush events. Lucky Neko also supported hobby events in the area by sponsoring awards and donating product.
On behalf of the hobby community, best wishes to Glen and Penny.

CSprgs Modeler on Paint Company Website
FRAM member Phil Cooley
did up a '70 Roadrunner in Dodge Factory colors. Phil took pictures and sent them in. The company liked his work so much that they put them up in their Gallery Three and featured the listing!
Those of us who grew up in the '70's might remember that great hemi-orange and white top edition of this classic car. Phil captures the feeling in his build up. The paint is acrylic enamel produced by Rainbow Products . Check out Phils Roadrunner as the new item in the Acrylic Enamel for Model Cars frame on the left.
FRAM is short for Front Range Automotive Modelers. The group is an adventurous bunch of enthusiasts lead by Ken Kitchen. Scratch building and bashing are common techniques for the group. Several members of the group brought home awards for their models from last year's Good Guys Car Show at PPIR.
The club has been around for years, having gotten it's start at Hobby Town in Citadel Crossing. Meetings are now held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month at 7 PM. The club is hosted by the Central United Methodist Church 1 block east of Murray and Platte. Anyone interested in joining the fun can contact Ken Kitchen at 719-260-1260 or kkitchen@uswest.net
